NEW YORK, NY, December 29, 2020.  –  Maya Wiley, candidate for Mayor of New York City, was paid over $250,000 in compensation in a single year by the New School as Senior Vice President for Social Justice after leaving her post within the de Blasio Administration.  The New School has been beset by financial difficulties and laid off over 100 clerical workers and staffers in October 2020.

This information, released by Aaron Foldenauer, candidate for Mayor of New York City, was discovered during a review of a publicly available IRS 990 Form filed by the New School for the year ending June 30, 2018, now available at https://aaronfornyc.com/press.

“For Maya Wiley to exploit progressive causes as a money grab is contrary to the very social justice issues for which she claims to advocate,” said Aaron Foldenauer, Candidate for Mayor of New York City.  “The average income of a New York City resident is less than $40,000 per year.  While Maya Wiley raked in over a quarter of a million dollars in a single year, our children were overwhelmed with student loan debt and average New Yorkers were struggling.”

Maya Wiley’s LinkedIn page indicates that she was the Senior Vice President for Social Justice at the New School for over three years, from July 2016 through September 2019, and subsequently served as a Professor at the New School starting in September 2019.

“Fighting for progressive change should not come at a cost to ordinary New Yorkers,” said Aaron Foldenauer.  “Unfortunately, Maya Wiley leveraged social justice issues to become her own personal cash grab.”

The IRS Form 990 filed by the New School shows that, during a single one-year period, Maya Wiley received $255,605 in base compensation and $34,550 in additional compensation, thus totaling $290,155 (for the time period starting July 1, 2017 and ending June 30, 2018).  See .pdf of IRS Form 990 at 67, available at https://aaronfornyc.com/press.

While being paid by the New School, Maya Wiley also served as a television analyst under contract with MSNBC, thus allowing her to earn additional income on top of the compensation from the New School.

“Students at the New School are being gouged with tuition bills mounting to approximately $50,000 per year while administrators like Maya Wiley are getting a huge payday,” said Foldenauer.  “Worse yet, in October 2020, the New School laid off over 100 clerical workers and staff.  This could have been prevented if administrators, like Maya Wiley, hadn’t exploited the New School’s progressive values to feather their own nests.”

Prior to joining the New School, Maya Wiley served as Mayor de Blasio’s chief lawyer.

“This is how the ruling class of our broken political establishment operates,” said Aaron Foldenauer.  “Maya Wiley’s ploy to capitalize on her position in the de Blasio administration by taking more than a quarter of a million dollars per year from the New School shows that she is unfit to be the next Mayor.  We need new leaders who will be concerned about all New Yorkers, not just themselves.”
